05/05/09 Court Date for Anthony Spidle

The first adult to be charged under the new “Animal Torture Law” will be appearing at the 3rd District Court, Thursday, May 7th, at 9am. Room W39 on the third floor. Judge William W. Barrett will be presiding. We are encouraging the public to attend his arraignment and to wear your Henry’s Law T-shirts.

Anthony Spidle severely beat and tortured his ex girlfriend’s 6 month old pit bull mix puppy named Gabriella. She was beaten with a skateboard and tennis racket and thrown against the wall. He recorded the puppy yelping and crying on his ex girlfriend’s voice mail saying, “she doesn’t love me and she doesn’t love you.” He then jumped on the puppy's head and throat, "yelling that he was going to kill him, cut off his head" and give it to his ex-girlfriend. The puppy barely survived.

Judge Barrett also presided in Henry’s case. Of the maximum penalty of 1 year, he sentenced Marc Vincent to 6 months of which he served only four. In court, Judge Barrett told Marc Vincent “Your conduct was just horrendous." He also said, "I don't like people who abuse animals and I don't like people who abuse children. Animals and children are vulnerable." It is our hope that Judge Barrett will represent the community that demanded stiffer penalties for animal torturers and send the message that this “horrendous” behavior will no longer be tolerated.

We are asking the public to write the Honorable Judge William W. Barrett and respectfully ask him to punish Anthony Spidle to the fullest extent of the law.

04/24/09 Earth Jam, Sunday, April 26th

Help Us Help Them is reorganizing and planning for the future of seeing Henry's Law passed. We are a community action, victims support group that will also work to see that the current "Animal Torture Law" is enforced and prosecuted. We will also continue to improve the current law until it punishes the ACT and not the ANIMAL. Then we will call it "Henry's Law".

The current felony law only protects "domestic" cats or dogs. "Domestic" is defined as ownership so currently feral, strays and homeless cats and dogs are not be protected. Our efforts to have the definition of "domestic" removed from the current statute have failed but we will continue to try.

We will also work to see the current " Animal Torture Law" be amended to change the definition of "companion animal" to include any animal that depends on a human for food, shelter and water. Anyone should be accountable and punished for torturing of any animal in their care.

We are also opposed to extremely cruel euthanasia methods like the gassing "kill box." A man is charged and convicted with animal cruelty for suffocating 14 puppies in which the judge regarded as a "heinous" act but our shelters are doing it legally. This must change!

If you care about these issues and want to help improve the lives of all animals in Utah then please consider joining our cause. We will be at Earth Jam, Sunday, April 26th at Liberty Park. Henry will be there!

Thank you to all of our supporters
